Booking the traditional package holiday used to involve collecting armfuls of brochures through which one browsed to find the ideal holiday. This would be followed by a trip to the high street travel agent who would check availability and hopefully book the package holiday of your choice on the dates you wanted.
Now, with the aid of the internet consumers can visit tour operators online, browse online brochures, check availability and make their booking online from the comfort of their own homes.
However, the internet has also led to an increase in consumers making their own independent travel arrangements by dealing directly with suppliers, rather than through a tour operator or agent, resulting in the saving of (sometimes) hundreds of pounds and allowing more flexibility on travel dates and length of stay.
At the click of a mouse consumers can book flights, car hire, accommodation and insurance. It is no surprise therefore that the number of independent holidays being booked over the internet is increasing.
We investigated this further and made a comparison of two similar villas in the same holiday destination, one booked online direct with the suppliers, the other through a well known high quality tour operator.
Case Study 1
We looked at two similar villas in the same area, both in private grounds, with pool and of a very high quality and standard.
The holiday is for 2 people, for 2 weeks, with car hire for the duration, in early September 2009.
The package holiday, booked through a quality tour company, worked out at £1480 per person for 2 weeks, making a total of £2,960 for a two week holiday. This price included return flights from London Gatwick, basic car hire for the duration of the holiday – insurance extra.
The same holiday, booked independently with flight and car hire suppliers and directly with the villa owner worked out as follows: Flight £636, Car hire £318, Villa £1100. Total = £2054
Therefore the total saving: £2,960 – £2,054 = £906
Case Study 2
Same holiday, but for October 2009
Package holiday = £2,040
Booked independently = £1,560
Therefore a total saving of: £2,040 – £1,560 = £480
With such savings, there is no wonder the independent travel market is becoming increasingly popular. Also with the emergence of one-stop travel websites that allow consumers to book everything from their site with a choice of suppliers, it is becoming even easier to arrange a holiday independently.
